What Is VFAT?

VFAT stands for Virtual File Allocation Table. It is a virtual installable file system driver used in Windows 95 and later operating system. It is used to handle long file names. The original FAT for the Disk Operating System (DOS) assumed file names were limited to a length of eight characters, so program extension was needed to handle the longer names allowed in Windows 95. VFAT operates in protected mode and serves as an interface between applications and the File Allocation Table (FAT).
